Signs You May Need Orthodontic Treatment
As a parent, you certainly want the best for your child. So when it comes to oral health, orthodontic treatment goes above and beyond the obvious goal of straightening teeth. Orthodontics also helps create and maintain healthy teeth and gums. For this reason, we advise that parents schedule a visit for their child to see an orthodontist around the age of 7-8 to identify any areas of concern, or need for future treatment. At this stage, your orthodontist will be able to determine the need for treatment based on your child’s jaw & facial structure as it develops. They’ll also take a look at how new teeth are growing and fitting in with the baby teeth that have yet to fall out.
But in the meantime, before getting a second opinion from a professional, there are signs you can look out for as parent beyond crooked or gapped teeth:
1) Losing baby teeth at an excessive rate
2) Late loss of baby teeth
3) Prolonged thumb sucking
4) Difficulty chewing
5) Physically noticeable overbite or underbite
6) Breathing through the mouth rather than the nose
7) Grinding teeth
8) Biting cheek or roof of mouth
9) Top & bottom teeth that fail to meet or fit together
Talk with your child. Ask them if they’re experiencing any discomfort or trouble regarding their oral health. Take notice of these warning signs.
