How To: Clean Your Retainer
Finally, the moment you’ve been waiting for…your braces are coming off! It’s an exciting day for our patients and for our staff. However, it is also the day that you receive your retainer and the responsibility that comes with it. Retainers are an important part of your treatment with us, as they keep your teeth from moving back to their “before braces’ position.
An important part of taking care of your retainers is keeping them clean. We’ve compiled a list of important steps and tips on keeping your retainer clean.
- Clean your retainer as soon as you remove it from your mouth. You can use either your tooth paste, a mild hand soap or dish soap and scrub the retainers with a toothbrush. This allows the debris to be removed before it hardens and becomes tougher to clean.
- For a deeper clean, you can purchase retainer or denture cleaning tablets from a store that sells toothpaste and similar supplies. Drop these tablets into a cup or bowl of water and let your retainer soak in the solution. DON’T USE HOT WATER! It can melt or deform your retainers. Once you remove it, be sure to give it a rinse before putting it back in its case.
- Always keep your retainers in the case when you are not wearing Keeping them in the case will reduce the number of bacteria that the retainer can come into contact with if it is left sitting out on a counter. And to avoid losing your retainers, never wrap in a napkin or tissue as they can easily be thrown away by mistake.
Follow these simple steps to ensure that your retainer is staying clean. And don’t forget to wear your retainers as prescribed by Dr. Perelmuter & Dr. Goldberg.
